4. Zai Shun Curry Fish Head at Blk 253, Jurong East St 24
Fish Head Curry has always been a tradition in the family,
from Mandai to Bukit Batok, from my Grandmother to my Father and of course from
the Fish Head to the Curry Sauce.
Nestled at a small and nice town in the west, Zai Shun has
been a part of my life ever since my father felt that he should bring me to eat
one of the stalls he love and I did not turned back since. This is not the main
reason why I love this town and this stall, it is also the surroundings that
made me feel nostalgic every time I drop by.
'Zai Shun' used to be at this food centre
From a small hawker stall located in the food centre, they
have become so popular that they moved to the coffee shop next door and made
this haven their own.
Learning from experiences, we always made an effort to
patronize to come at least 30 minutes before the main crowd comes in and get
our preferred seats!
What makes us come back again and again despite under the
scorching heat and droplets of sweat? The list of dishes I am going to mention
should bring you to this stall soon…
The Curry Fish Head with its tantalizing and generous flesh
along the ingredients that come with it has made the dish a must have on the
table. The flesh is extremely fresh and tender while the curry sauce has
immersed into the flesh and it goes perfectly well with the brinjals and
ladyfingers.

But with a slight preference from my father, I prefer to
have the Braised Pork Trotters that always make me have an extra bowl of rice
heavily soaked in the dark soya sauce. Yes it is extremely sinful but to have
that extra layer of fats along with the skin dipped in the ‘Chap’ into my mouth
has made me feel that I have stopped time just to enjoy this heavenly moment.
Amazingly tender, I can even chew the pork meat using my tongue and especially
the meat that sticks with the bones!
Hei Chor
Right at the corner opposite Zai Shun lies a very authentic
bakery, Hiat Huat Coffeeshop. I have never failed to visit whenever I am here
because of their Old School Biscuits. If you belong to the 80’s like I am or
even earlier, you will definitely love this place they sell the biscuits I ate
I was a kid! Their Ondeh Ondeh is also one of my favourites because it is not
too sweet and very ‘shiok’ after the juice splashed over all my mouth (Beware,
don’t take 1 bite but put the whole ball into your mouth to enjoy the full
delicacy of this simple dish!)
As I walked down towards the food centre, I noticed ‘Jurong
Town Council’ opposite with McDonald’s beside the building. Remembering this
building as the ‘Flagship’ of Jurong GRC, this town council has become a branch
that serves the local community in this town.
This Macdonald’s has always been the usual hangout for my
family whenever we need a dose of vanilla ice cream after we had the spicy and
satisfying meal. It has been renovated a few times over the years but the
feeling still remains the same.
Sometimes I find it hard to express my feelings over some
places I grew up with but one thing I know for sure, these are the places that have
seen the growth of me from childhood to teenage years and now an adult whom I
hope to be contributing positively to my country’s economy, growth and my
family’s happiness too.
Like what I always say: “Those people who says Sunshine
brings Happiness has never dance in the rain!”
