Food That I Grew Up With (Part 1/5)

With a mission to scurry for the hidden gems of good food and places i love, Food ‘K’ Maestro has embarked on a journey starting from the Sunny Island of Singapore with his slogan ‘I Eat I Breathe’.

Despite writing countless articles from niche cafes to restaurant groups and not forgetting hawker food in other capacities, I have decided to start from the basics and emerge in a new identity with a logo that hope to take Singapore by storm from September.

For the first 5 articles over the next few weeks, I will write what I always hope to – Food that I grew up with. Narrowing down to just 5 dishes and the places I have been patronizing, here I present the first of five;

1. Jurong Hilltop Japanese and Indonesian Restaurant

This restaurant has been in my memory through the years and till today; it is still a dinner place for my family on almost every occasion. Almost 30 years to be exact and I am fortunate to be able to see the development of Jurong Island as well. The House Signature of this restaurant or should I say my family’s favourite dish have to be the Grilled Teppanyaki Sirloin with their special sauce that comes with it. I prefer it middle rare and although the beef took faster to cook than other Japanese Restaurants, the chef still managed to bring out the best in this dish. The meat is so juicy and tender that I can literally chew it off within a few bites and still feel the taste lingering around my senses.

Not forgetting the Garlic Rice that has always been a must order on our list through the years. Fried on the spot with an extremely generous amount of garlic and egg, this simple dish did not make the same mistake by letting us still able to taste the rice and yet not sticked together at all.

Last Stop always has to be the resting area where desserts and drinks are served after the main meal. Traditional Favourites like Almond bean curd never goes out of trend and my youngest brother all time favourite. Mango Pudding. He still likes to order extra whenever he gets the chance to. For me, I am still the same old Maestro but coffee whenever I am there.

With a refreshing cup of café latte and gazing at the magnificent view overseeing Jurong Island, there is no better place to spend a relaxing weekend with my family. Looking back at all of us, it is remarkable that we still love the same old place with the same old design and same old ambience. Something is better not changed, don’t you think?
